According to legend, the temple was established in 794 by a monk named Yeon-hoe, who built a small hut and began practicing Buddhism. Over the centuries, the temple grew in size and influence, serving as a center of learning and spirituality for monks and laypeople alike.
During the Joseon Dynasty, Bongeunsa became a hub of Buddhist scholarship, attracting scholars from all over Korea and producing many important works of Buddhist literature.
However, the temple fell into decline during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, as Korea underwent significant political and social upheaval. It was damaged during the Korean War in the 1950s and subsequently rebuilt.
